13th Symposium on Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy

Prevention and cutting-edge research for a greener future

Maceió-Al, Brazil, November 22-26

The Gogó da Ema

When science and nature resemble: “Gogó da Ema”

“Gogó da Ema“ was a majestic palm tree in Maceió. It existed until 1955 when it succumbed to the advance of the sea. However, to this day, it is still remembered as a symbol of Maceió, a city whose main characteristic is its successful association with the ocean, the sun, and the wind.

The distinctive shape of “Gogó da Ema” trunk bears a striking resemblance to impedance diagrams. In the same way as impedance diagrams provide a unique fingerprint of electrically-stimulated interfacial processes as a function of frequency, each curve and bend of “Gogó da Ema” trunk represents a different stage of its life, shaped by the forces of nature; a living, growing impedance diagram which was molded by the forces of nature and time.

About

The First International Symposium on Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy was organized in 1989 in Bombannes (France). From this first event, the Symposium was held on a triennial basis at different countries all around the world: Santa Barbara, CA, USA (1992); Ysermonde, Belgium (1995); Angra dos Reis, RJ, Brazil (1998); Marileva, Italy (2001); Cocoa Beach, FL, USA (2004); Argelès-sur-Mer, France (2007); Algarve, Portugal (2010); Okinawa, Japan (2013); A Toxa (La Toja), Spain (2016); Lège-Cap-Ferret, France (2019), Beijing, China (2023-postponed for 1 year due to the COVID pandemics). Continuing the event’s tradition of bringing together EIS experts from around the world on different continents, the 13th edition of the Symposium will return to Brazil in the city of Maceió, AL, from November 22 to 26, 2026.
We hope that the warm atmosphere of the Brazilian summer will provide the ideal setting to present and discuss new results, developments, and trends of the EIS technique, while maintaining the Symposium’s role as a leading global forum for this powerful analytical method.

Claude Gabrielli Award

The Claude Gabrielli Award – History and Perspectives

The Symposium on Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), initiated in 1989 under the leadership of Dr. Claude Gabrielli, has become the leading international meeting dedicated to the field. Held every three years, this conference provides a unique forum for scientists from diverse backgrounds to gather and discuss this versatile and powerful technique.

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the conference (EIS 2019, Lège-Cap-Ferret, France), the Claude Gabrielli Award was created to recognize original and significant contributions to the field of EIS. The inaugural laureates were Dr. Bernard Tribollet (Sorbonne Université, France) and Prof. Mark E. Orazem (University of Florida, USA), honored for their outstanding creativity in both experimental and theoretical studies and for their exceptional role in disseminating and promoting impedance spectroscopy.

At the 12th Symposium (EIS 2023, Beijing, China), the award was conferred upon Prof. Annick Hubin (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium) and Prof. Jianqing Zhang (Zhejiang University, China), in recognition of their remarkable scientific achievements and their contributions to strengthening the international EIS community.

The upcoming 13th Symposium, to be held in Maceió, Brazil, in 2026, will again provide the opportunity to present the Claude Gabrielli Award. As in previous editions, the Scientific Committee, in coordination with the Organizing Committee, will be responsible for identifying and selecting the laureates.

Looking ahead, the award aims not only to acknowledge and celebrate outstanding scientific contributions (whether experimental, theoretical, methodological, or applied), but also to broaden the circle of recipients beyond the immediate community of the Symposium. In doing so, the award seeks to ensure both the continuity of Claude Gabrielli’s legacy and the international expansion and vitality of the EIS community.

Location

The event will be held between November 22 and 26, 2026 in Brazil, in the city of Maceió, state of Alagoas.

Venue

Maceió is one of the main tourist destinations in Brazil. Although served by a few international flights, the city’s airport has a large number of flights to the main airport hubs in Brazil: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Salvador, and Recife, with several daily flights and at different times, allowing you to reach the city from the airport of origin with only one connection in Brazil.
Direct flights from Lisbon and Buenos Aires are available, but they do not operate daily, so it is necessary to consult the airlines when purchasing the ticket.

Maceió airport is a few kilometers from the symposium venue, which can be easily reached by taxi for approximately 25 dollars, or between 15 and 25 dollars by Uber.
A valid entry and stay visa may be required for foreigners of some nationalities. Participants are responsible for consulting with the authorities about the need for a visa and the requirements/documents needed for its issuance.
Upon request, the conference organizers could provide an official letter of invitation to facilitate your visa application. This invitation letter does not imply any commitment from the Organizing Committee to provide any financial contribution.
